UPDATE: SENATE REJECTS DRILLING IN THE REFUGE
Despite intense pressure from the White House and a flurry of last-minute maneuvering by drilling proponents, the Senate on April 18 rebuffed an effort to open Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas exploration. In two procedural votes, Democrats and several Republicans defeated a pro-drilling amendment to a broader energy bill -- delivering a huge victory to environmentalists, including BioGems Defenders who've sent more than 930,000 messages protesting plans to drill in the refuge, a rugged wilderness that teems with caribou, polar bears, Arctic wolves, and millions of migratory birds each summer. In addition to protecting wildlife habitat, the Senate's action is a direct rebuke to the Bush administration, which has championed Arctic drilling as a cornerstone of its national energy plan, even though the refuge's coastal plain would likely yield less than a six-month supply of oil. Still, the fight over the Arctic is far from over. Drilling advocates in the Senate have pledged to raise the issue again. And the House has already passed an energy bill that would allow drilling -- a key difference that will have to be hammered out when, and if, the Senate passes its own version of the bill.

If you took action on behalf of the Arctic, thank you! Your calls, faxes and emails made a world of difference.

Don't let the Bush administration dismantle 30 years of clean water protections - More than 30 years ago, Ohio's Cuyahoga River burst into flames, galvanizing public outrage and spurring the passage of the Clean Water Act on October 18, 1972. This landmark law is responsible for cleaning up 55 percent of our nation's rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, and has become a model for every subsequent U.S. environmental law. But while we urgently need to clean up remaining polluted waters, the Bush administration is dismantling the tools that have made the Clean Water Act so successful. The administration is proposing to weaken or has already weakened requirements for treating raw sewage, cleaning up polluted waters, keeping solid waste out of waters and protecting wetlands. Now the administration is considering changing which waters are even covered by the Clean Water Act, potentially removing from federal protection certain tributaries, waterways and wetlands that are connected to larger rivers, lakes, and estuaries. Polluters would have free rein to fill, dredge or dump wastes into these waters, and their pollution could easily be carried downstream. That's no way to celebrate a 30th anniversary.

America's national parks are in trouble. The National Park Service cannot keep up with the cost of protecting and preserving our national treasures. If this trend continues, our children and our grandchildren may never see a condor soar over the Grand Canyon, tour the soldiers' huts at Morristown, or enjoy a rocky hike through Zion. Click Here to take action now to help preserve America's national parks - and our collective experiences.

Tell your senators to address this issue now.

Tell Congress to reject President Bush's "More Pollution Solution" - The president's proposed national energy plan would greatly benefit his industry campaign contributors -- at the expense of our environment and our health. Tell your senators and representative that we deserve a cleaner, more balanced energy strategy.
